What factors led to the rise of dictators? Why do dictatorships flourish during times of depression?
After world war one, the global economy wasn’t in good shape. We placed all of the blame of the war on Germany, and forced them to pay for it. Italy’s economy suffered due to the loss. With the economic ruin all around, Stalin wanted to make his country’s economy strong, and he had the right idea. In times of depression, dictatorships flourish. More powerful centralized government and order makes it easier to fix an economy, and to control your people. Hitler, being a dictator, represented an idea. He was a symbol the masses could rally behind, when they had nothing else, allowing total control. Mussolini used his power and taught his people that he was always right, and banned opposing political parties, also allowing total control. Stalin punished his people severely when they resisted, because, as a dictator, he had that power, giving him total control. Turmoil gives need for order, and dictators fill that need. It isn’t just or fair, but it works to further their own agenda, and it gives them power.
